Icarus - 2009

'Junkyard' Kinetic Sculpture

icarus

I find it interesting that putting a ‘human’ face on a kinetic object instantly
anthropomorphizes the object. Any motion is translated into a human action.
I am inspired by motion - there’s a beauty and freedom in motion that is hard to describe.

A tool doing its work, carving a pattern in the air.

Originally I titled this piece Sisyphicarus,
from the myths of Sysyphus and Icarus, for obvious reasons…

created for
"The Moose Must Persuade the Duck"
at FLOAT Gallery, Oakland, CA
